Aromatherapy Massage What is Aromatherapy Massage? Aromatherapy massage has been an integral part of the herbal medical traditions as practiced in ancient times in Egypt, Italy, India and China. We now know that when scented oils are added as part of a whole body massage, the scent enters the brain and limbic system through the nostrils. The limbic system controls the emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones. It is also believed that the skin directly absorbs the plant oils, which aids in spreading the healing affects throughout the body. For aromatherapy massage, the essential plant oils are added to the massage oil. These essential oils are specifically selected in order to release vapors to help support the healing of various ailments. Those who practice aromatherapy massage believe that this process can help relieve stress, slow down the heart rate, affect blood pressure, aid the digestive process, support the immune system and enhance memory. What's so special about it? Aromatherapy massage uses a selection of plant oils that are believed to heal specific ailments. Some oils relax, while others energize. Many of these plants have been widely used in herbal treatments in the past. For example: -- Chamomile, Lavender and Geranium are used to calm or soothe the client Sometimes, oils may be selected to remind the client of a happier, more carefree time, which can induce further relaxation.

Who gets it? Aromatherapy Massage is best suited for clients with nervous related disorders, such those who suffer from migraines, who are prone to headaches, suffer from insomnia, and those with digestive problems. Others who have found aromatherapy massage beneficial are those who suffer from PMS symptoms. There has been some medical research with new mothers that suggests that those receiving aromatherapy massage suffered less from postpartum depression than those who did not receive the treatment. Also, the group of mothers who received the treatment showed more vigor and developed a deeper attachment to their babies. There is also increasing use of aromatherapy massage by cancer patients who have entered the palliative care stage. However, it is not for everyone. People suffering from open wounds or skin rashes, who are undergoing chemotherapy, recuperating from surgery, or women who are pregnant should consult their doctors before undergoing aromatherapy massage.
